Six Reasons Why Refilled Inkjet Cartridges Don't Work

July 1, 2004 -- With the high cost of original inkjet cartridges, many look for alternatives by using refilled inkjet cartridges. The lower price of remanufactured cartridges is initially attractive but if unreliable printing results are experienced, many consumers feel the savings are not justified.

"Inkjet cartridges are something most people don't want to know about", said Peter Stroud with 10 years experience in the inkjet refilling industry. He continued "they are expensive and people replace them only when necessary; and when a problem arises with a cartridge it is hard to find solid reasons as to why the cartridge appears to be faulty".

Here are the main reasons for cartridge failure starting with the most common:

1. The cartridge printhead has dried out. Without cleaning the printhead, a cartridge will not work after refilling.

2. The cartridge electronics have failed. This can occur for a number of reasons, and once failed, the cartridge is useless. Often this is indicated by the printer lights flashing in an unusual sequence.

3. The ink used is the incorrect type. Inks are specific for particular cartridges and printheads based on physical attributes such as pH, viscosity and surface tension.

4. An air bubble in the cartridge printhead can stop the ink being printed on to the page. This can often be rectified by multiple printhead cleans.

5. The electronics on the cartridge need cleaning. Simply cleaning the electronics with a lint free cloth and some rubbing alcohol will rectify this problem.

6. The printhead sealing tape has not been removed from the printhead.

According to Stroud, the most economical way of using inkjet cartridges, is to have them filled as soon as they run out to ensure the cartridges refill in optimum condition.
